Tooth-Coloured Fillings

When taking care of a filling, Dr. Radice, Dr. Perrella and Dr. Annie remove the decayed portion of your tooth and "fill" the area of your tooth where the decayed material was removed. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse such as grinding your teeth.

Dr. Radice, Dr. Perrella and Dr. Annie use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth to be filled and then remove the decayed area. Once the decay has been removed, Dr. Radice, Dr. Perrella or Dr. Annie prepare the space for the filling by cleaning the cavity of bacteria and debris. If the decay is near the root, Dr. Radice, Dr. Perrella or Dr. Annie may first put in a liner made of glass ionomer, composite resin, or other material to protect the nerve. Generally, after the filling is in, Dr. Radice, Dr. Perrella and Dr. Annie will finish and polish it.

Dr. Radice, Dr. Perrella or Dr. Annie may offer silver amalgam (which consists of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper); or a tooth-coloured material called composite resin fillings to fill your cavity. The location and extent of the decay, cost of the filling material, your insurance coverage, and our recommendation assist in determining the type of filling best for you.
